Mutations:
- Probability Manipulation – Madison is capable of increasing the probability that a certain event will occur. Whatever event she wants to occur has to be within her field of vision. She also cannot make the impossible events happen (such as messing with the laws of physics to stop a moving object), so she is forced to become creative (increase the odds that a bird flies between her and a bullet for example). She cannot change outcomes that have been determined in the past (example: opening a mystery box and finding gold inside since the contents were determined before she arrive at the mystery box). She is also limited to causing immediate effects. Long term luck or consequences are currently outside her ability. High emotions can lead to accidental power use. This will cause random adverse events to happen if under severe mental or emotional strain. Many times she’s unsure whether these things happened because of her influence or not.
- Invisibility – Madison can make herself invisible, allowing her to move around undetected. She also doesn’t seem to appear in mirrors or cameras. She can also extend this power to others and objects. However, she is limited to the number of people, no more than 5, including herself, or the size of the object, nothing that she can’t carry. This can be a mentally draining process, leading to migraines if done for too long, and damage that she sustains in this state will effectively knock her out of invisibility.
- Superhuman Speed and Agility – Madison can move and react much faster than a normal human when using her powers. However, she tends to be somewhat slower than other speedsters, being unable to break the speed of sound. It does come with a few major flaws. It isn’t limitless in time and tends to exhaust her. It does use a lot of energy, so if does it for too long, she is likely to get experience a large blood sugar crash or dehydration if she doesn't take breaks between use. Short breaks and some quick sugar tends to get her ready to go again.
Beta
Equipment:
- Field Communicator
- Lockpicks
- Pistol and ammunition
- Fighting knife
- Triptans and pain-relievers for migraines
- Fruit juice and water
Uniform:
Black body suit with light armor made of ultra-lightweight ballistic cloth around vital areas. It covers her whole body because she really doesn’t get why so many women go exposing their organs. The color scheme is mostly black with some green highlights. Her mask is black and covers the bottom half of her face. Just above the mask, she wears black goggles to cover her eyes. Around her waist, there is a belt with multiple pouches.
Skills:
- Photography
- Poetry
- Juggling
- Thievery – pick-pocketing and lock-picking mostly
- Martial Arts training – Madison isn’t well diverse in this area, but she knows a few different arts. Mostly, muay thai and boxing for hand-to-hand. It isn’t stylish, but it is brutal. However, she'll really only use this if she can't use her fighting knife.
- Ability to use a pistol, which is her first choice when it comes to offensive measures
Weaknesses:
- Power drawbacks, which are explained in the mutations themselves
- Normal human physical strength and resilience
- Gets in over her head without realizing
- Prone to violence
- Reckless

Motivation, and Why:
Camaraderie. A sense of purpose. These were things Maddie lacked before, and now there is more or less a reason for her existence with some people she can trust as well. That’s really all that matters to her.
Loyalty: Mauraders
Physical Appearance:
Madison’s short brown hair is cut roughly, like she did it herself. She stands at about 5’3” and about 130lbs or so. Her eyes are fairly large when compared to most, almost childish and are deep green in color. Being somewhat active, her muscles are somewhat defined, but not immensely so. She is a little pale and burns easily in the summer sun. She is somewhere between rectangle and pear-shaped, not fitting well into either category. She has a set of branching lightning scars diagonally down her back. Someone might confuse them with tattoos of trees because they look almost elegant. Madison definitely has no issue showing them off.
She has a lot of boots. They are her shoe of a choice and she hordes them. In the summer, she wears a lot of tank tops and denim shorts. There is some variation, but that’s her M.O. in terms of style. In the winter, it’s almost exclusively tights and sweater dresses or jeans and cardigans. In addition, she has a wealth of hats, wearing one almost every day.
History:
3 years old. Mother. Madison has some really vague memories of her. Blond hair, large black glasses, tons of freckles. She also remembers her father trying to explain that she wasn’t coming back. She’s been asked if she feels bad about the memory. Her answer: Can’t really miss something that you don’t remember having.
4 years old: Gambling. Her father used to do a lot of it. That’s pretty much the only thing Madison remembers about him because it was the only thing that they ever did together. The rest of the time she was alone in their small cramped apartment. However, gambling was the thing they did together. He considered her to be good luck. She didn’t know why but occasionally the cards, dice, numbers, machines would do as she wished.
7 years old: Death. Heart attack. Madison always thought it was from working too hard. After all, her old man had 3 different jobs and hardly ever slept. It was quiet funeral and she could count the number of people on two hands.
Invisible. It took some time to find Madison after the funeral. She seemed to just vanish without a trace. Eventually, the police found her coming back to the grave sitting by the tombstone about a week later. She was starving, but she didn’t really care at all.
9 years old: Foster home, group home, foster home. None of them ever worked out well. In the foster homes, Madison ended up running off or just not getting along with the parents. One home swore she brought bad luck and maybe she kind of did. She isn’t sure how much she caused and how much happened on its own. At the time, it didn’t register that was even a power that she had. The invisibility thing though was well-known. It was the more or less the reason she got bounced around so often. A lot of people didn’t feel comfortable with a kid with a rotten attitude who could spontaneously go invisible. She got sent to a few residential treatment centers. Mostly she just kept quiet when she was there, told any authority figures what they wanted to hear, and disappeared when the old kids were around.
10 years old: One in 700,000. That’s the chance of being struck by lightning once. It happened to her about three times. Those odds had to be told in scientific notation. She wanted it to end, but was too scared of death. Non-fatal indirect lightning strikes. Should make a full recovery. You’re very lucky, miss. Don’t believe her? She has the branching scars to prove it.
11 years old: Homeless. One would be surprised just how many homeless teenagers are running about. Madison wasn’t even the youngest in the bunch. A pretty good number of them were other mutants. Pro-Brotherhood sentiment was pretty high amongst them all. She did learn a few things about how to steal though in this time.
12 years old: Lawless. Madison was beginning to find herself in more and more trouble. She had enough overconfidence in her abilities to keep robbing more and more powerful people. She started 'helping' people win bets, cards, and dice at 'casinos' (A hole in the wall where people through their money away was probably more close to truth though). It was something she knew how to do and do well, but it was only a matter of time before people caught on, and she got on some people's bad side. Twelve years old and a gang or two wants you dead, Madison considers that a true accomplishment.
Collapse. Anyone will tell you the subway tunnels aren't well maintained in some area. Perhaps, it was only a matter of time before it collapsed, but what makes it occur at a certain time. There were a few casualties, and Madison takes credit for all of them. Running from people out to get here through the train tracks, she wanted something to get in the way to stop them. And she was panicking. Panic and her never mixed well. It tended to result in destructive events. That's when everything collapsed on her and her pursuers. With some broken ribs, a broken leg, and a concussion, she's amazed she was only able to haul herself out of that mess. Some people certainly suspected her, and, needless to say, this entire event really only got more people searching for her.
Essex. The collapse drew a number of eyes in her direction. Despite her best efforts to lay low, some people did manage to find her. She doesn't know how Nathaniel Essex found her, and honestly, she couldn't care less. She was still healing at that point from her injuries, and he offered shelter. All he needed to do was offer an ice pack, and she probably would have done whatever he asked. This was perhaps the only home that she was ever on her best behavior.
More recent times: Madison owes a debt to Nathaniel Essex, and that is one of the major factors influencing her to become a marauder. However, she also regards him as a father figure somewhat. She's trained herself in anyway she could to be useful to him, and she's nothing if not a loyal a pawn. This loyalty began to extend to her teammates, developing a fondness for them all.
RP Sample:
Maddie felt her head splitting at the seams. She swore that it almost threatened to crack itself open. Her vision was blurry, turning the surroundings into a swirl of color that was way to bright to look at. The light, the smell, the noise… merely existence was enough to aggravate her right now. The migraine wasn’t helped by the fact that she was horribly dehydrated. Her muscles shook when she walked, and the world spun and tilted uneasily. She stopped walking and began to crawl. When that became too much, she just laid down to the side of a dumpster.
Stealing from the wrong people. However, basic necessities and safety were always a trade-off. She ran… she ran really fast… she ran really fast and was invisible to boot. Now, she had money, but she hardly had the energy to go anywhere to buy herself food. An unfixable problem, really. It wouldn’t be so great to just die right here…
Maddie swears that she only closed her eyes for a second. A brief second. There is too much light, and her head is still pounding. “Lights…” she croaks, trying to survey her surroundings. Hospital. She almost gets up before seeing the IVs full of fluids being pumped into her veins. She probably needed those, and probably shouldn’t tear them out just to turn off the lights. Where was the nurse? This was aggravating her head. God damn LIGHTS! She hears the pop of a light bulb dying. Wasn’t that lucky? However, living with the lights was probably better than the sharp pain the rolls over her skull as a result from that stunt. She groans loudly, and her yelling seems to have attracted someone. About damn time.
“Miss, please calm down.”
“Head…” she groans. Her mouth feels like desert.
“I’ll get something for it,” the nurse says, heading out.
A few hours later, they get around to asking her questions. A nurse comes in with food as a peace offering almost.
“We’re going to have to ask you some questions. We hope you don’t mind miss. What’s your name?” she asks, handing her the food.
“Lois Lane.” She doesn’t expect that to work, but she’s not good at coming up with fake names on the spot.
“Age?” Wait, how did that work?!
“12.” No point in lying there.
“What are your parents’ names so we can contact them?”
She breaks a slight smile and asks, “You can speak to the dead?”
It’s a joke, but the nurse fails to see the humor in this though. “No. I am… very sorry… who is your foster family?”
She kind of forgot the names of the last people who were assigned to her, but she wasn’t going to tell the nurse that anyways. “I was at a recreational treatment center. Cedar Hill.”
“Ah. Thank you. We’ll see that you get transferred there shortly.” Maddie gives a nod and scarfs down the sandwich as the nurse leaves. After that, she starts raiding drawers for belongings and whatever else she can take with her. In the cabinet by the bed, she finds her things. She changes her clothes as quick as she can before the nurse realizes the huge lie. Taking the jello cup, she vanishes and walks out the front door.
