Full Name: Scott Summers
Codename Cyclops
Nicknames:
Gender: Male
Age: 27
D.O.B. September 3, 1986 (According to if Inferno stuff ended in 2013…. )
Species: Genetically overpowered (Mutant)
---
Occupation: Teacher, sometimes fisherman, X-man ( sometimes an occupational hazard.)
Canon or Original: Canon
Mutations:
(Okay look, the wiki is REALLY Scientific and like.. UBBER with details about exactly how much and … stuff.. so see: x-men.wikia.com/wiki/Cyclops for the scientific version of what I’m about to put in a non-scientific, more English major way…)
Optic Blast: [/i] Cyclops can omit a powerful beam of concussive (and really dangerous) force from his eyes. This is usually tinted ruby in color because Ruby Quartz can be used to make special lenses that help Cyclops focus and bend his attention (and vision) to targets. The ruby quartz also assists him naturally spin off the energy into such a way he can “see” without being blind, or blasting the shit outta everything he looks at. Cyclops has a traumatic past, not to mention the help of a brain injury sustained in childhood that prevents him from shutting off his power, or having true control over it. Thus, his visor (see equipment) helps him manage the flow between his eyes, the powerful force he channels and the rest of the world. He can do a very narrow, focused blast that can cut through things like a laser, a more “concussive” blast that simply knocks people back into walls with “burn” damage (like a laser yes?) (.. Seriously I’m directly going from canon and that wiki entry for “optic blast” to cover his powers… it’s way to sciencey for me..)
Spatial Awareness: [/i] Scott has a “sixth sense” for how things are laid out and how they can be played against for the optimum use. He can use this awareness to channeling his powers to make “bank shots” and effect people in not usual ways. Paranoia has helped tune Scott’s spatial awareness with helping find exits or find places to reflect things back at people. Always useful in battle!
Energy Resistance[/i] Scott’s resistant to various sorts of energy due to the psionic field that surrounds his body (and stops him from being fried by his own powers!). This makes him immune to his brothers powers (well Immune to Havok and partially immune to Vulcan).
Classification: Beta
Equipment:
(Joy’s version) Pretty glasses. One pair is for combat, one pair is for daily use.. both prevent people from getting zapped!
(Wiki version!) Cyclops' Visor: The mask Scott wears to prevent random discharge is lined with powdered ruby quartz crystal. It incorporates two longitudinally mounted flat lenses which can lever inward providing a constantly variable exit slot of 0 inches to .79 inches in height and a constant width of 5.7 inches. The inverted clamshell mechanism is operated by a twin system of miniature electrical motors. As a safety factor there is a constant positive closing pressure provided by springs. The mask itself is made of high-impact plastic. There is an overriding finger-operated control mechanism on either side of the mask, and normal operation is through a flat micro-switch installed in the thumb of either glove. A separate pair of lenses were also designed for Scott to use while sleeping.
Uniform:
Scott’s currently in a somewhat… rebellious.. phase… the bad boy at his best. The white knight on a black knight quest. He currently favors black cargo pants of a tough material that provides protection from many things, not quite bullet proof, but it’s not going to be easy to slice to ribbons either. He wears a black jacket with a yellow “X”, proudly showing his affiliation as one of Xavier’s men and keeper of his dream of humans and mutants living side by side. Scott also wears military grade combat boots, with steel toes. (And of course his Visor.)
Skills:
Expert Pilot-
Master Strategist and Tactician
Master Martial Artist
Weaknesses:
Fear of losing control: [/i] (driving goal) Scott’s always had this thing about control. Perhaps because so much of his life has been one big out of control mess- that never gets any better. He finds happiness, and life, enviably just takes it right away again. He gets super powers- and he can’t control them. He falls in love- the girl dies… He finds love again, only to be called to duty .. and yeah, that girl dies too.. And their kid gets thrown to the future where he might live- away from Scott. Don’t even get him *started* about his parents. That whole thing makes Scott need to control things for his sanity- and well.. hopefully the betterment of others?
Guilt: [/i]
Some people are able to shove the guilt of their actions off their shoulders with the easy toss. Not Scott. He carries every failure, every moment when his actions might have changed something right there on his back. If his powers could manifest a spirit that sat there on his shoulders pointing out how he could do better- would do better- in the future. That creature would have company. Lots of company. Sure he’s trying to work past it. Sure he’s even learning how to share- kind of- with Storm and the leadership of the X-men.. But he’s Xavier’s student, his knight, his Lancelot… now if only that shit let him sleep at night.
The Cover Up [/i] Scott’s worlds been shaken, a lot. First the whole X-men thing.. he became a dad.. lost his wife.. his son.. everything’s just not okay in his world.. So he’s gotten a bit shaky.. a bit too controlling.. a bit to guilt ridden… But gods forbid they take him off the front line so Scott Summers has begun covering up his emotions. Yeah he’s still the normally stoic guy buy there’s an edge to him… One could think that it speaks of over confidence, or of a man desperately trying to hold on and protect to what little he has left- or the closer feeling.. that this is a man without much left.
Can’t control his powers[/i]
Scott can’t really “control” his powers. He can’t turn them off. He can’t go a day, an hour, a moment without his special glasses.
---
Motivation, and Why: Scott has always wanted to be a better person. To succeed at giving mutants a safe place and give them the opportunities that are just out of his reach. A home. A Family that cares and if he has to kill a few people to protect his family, and keep Xavier’s hands clean.. well.. He’s okay with that too.
Loyalty: X-men/ Xavier
Physical Appearance: Scott is 6’3” and weighs approximately 195 pounds. He keeps his brown hair rather short, not quite a military cut, but not far off. His eyes, when not channeling his powers are also brown, but typically because of the nature of his mutation, his eyes are covered with red quarts glasses (or a visor). Scott tends to wear jeans, or black pants and shirts that are tight enough to not provide much of a grip should he get into a brawl. He tends to wear military grade combat boots, in and out of uniform.
History:
Scott Summers was the first child of Major Christopher Summers, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Katherine Ann. He was a pretty young, and wild child, who often had the run of the house, until his brother, Alex was born. When they were young, like five or six (Scott’s still not really sure exactly when it happened as he sustained pretty serious injuries so this time of his life is something of a foggy …thing..), his parents were flying home from their cabin in Alaska on his Dad’s private plane when something went wrong.
Katherine put the only parachute on the boys and told Scott to take care of Alex. Then she pushed them both out of the plane. Scott and Alex’s parachute caught fire and Scott used his powers for the first time to save them- manifesting the ability at a very young age – if somewhat uncontrolled. However the fall was enough to give both boys traumatic injuries. For Scott this was ultimately the complete inability to control his powers as they continued to manifest more and more frequently until he fully came into his powers at age 15.
Without parents and without anyone to tell them who they are, both Scott and Alex were sent into foster care. Alex was sent away, far away, from his older brother, which left Scott in a pickle. He knew it was his job to watch out, and care, for his younger brother. Yet he was unable to do so because of the adults around him. Scott however was, relatively, a good kid. Always wanting to please the authority figures around him for a chance, the carrot treat, to see his brother again… In the hospital it was pretty easy… until one night his powers came back and blasted a hole off the roof.
He lost a year. When he woke up again, he was placed in the State Home of Foundlings, and his powers were silent. In Omaha, Nebraska he was tested and experimented on in the guise of frequent checks on his health. Not unusual considering his medical history. He was never adopted and bullied at the state home for his “brown nosing” and acceptance of authority. Silently Scott began building what would become a backbone. He also learned to school his expressions and hide his emotions from the tormenting of the other students.
When he was thirteen he began experiencing blinding headaches. He saw a specialist who provided him with glasses with lenses made of ruby-quartz. This cut down the pain his eyes and helped channel the energy. The headaches though, had been the reemerging of his powers, fighting to get past all the safety measures that had been put in his youth to protect people…. But an uncontrolled, accidental blast because someone bumps into his back? That’s something sunglasses can stop… Scott managed to stop the crane by obliterating it with another blast- but the damage was done.
Faced with an angry, pissed off mob sure that he was attempting to kill them all, or running for his life, Scott chose to break the rules that kept him safe and he ran away. Scott fled and hid on a freight train. Life for the next three years was a hard blur of fighting, learning to control his fledgling abilities and dealing with the fact his powers, slowly but surely, stopped turning off at all. He ran into, and got mixed up with, Jack O’Diamonds (Jack Winters), a criminal who had telepathy and- like the emerging mutant Scott, was learning to control his powers. He convinced Scott to join him to steal.
It was an angel who truly saved him though. He met her in a dream, though she called it something different. His Angel with red hair who coaxed him to do something different. Who soothed him when Jack beat him for not stealing, and ultimately saved him with the help of a man who’d become like a second father- Charles Xavier. It wasn’t much of a choice, leaving the life of a felon on the run to a student. The change, was rather different and startling. For two years he had been not in a school- or even in a real home. Now he had both, and the first few months were filled with learning, and catching up to all the things that made a home a home.
And Scott loved it. He wanted to protect that home and ideal. He wanted to be, so much, like the man Charles Xavier was. He wanted, dreamed, and fought to become the type of man that Charles Xavier could count on, to lean on in times of trouble- and perhaps, one day, help carry on his dream of safety. When Xavier first decided to create the X-men, Cyclops had been the first one in line. The one who would bring them home safe, and wear … yellow… lots of yellow…
Of course there was the girl, Jean.. He fell in love with her- how could he not after she all but saved him. And he tried to be worthy of her love and affection- even though he was a nothing and a no one that no one wanted to bring home- until she brought him home. Everything he was becoming as an adult was really because of her and Xavier. His heroes. But it wasn’t until Bobby’s sixteenth birthday party that he admitted, finally, that he loved her… and found out she loved him in return.
Their lives and adventures in the X-men were great and memorable. (And let’s face it this history is HUGE…) At one point, he proposed to Jean telekinetically… before “Shit got real” … and she died.. . It broke him that he couldn’t’ save her. That he couldn’t ‘feel’ her anymore. That all his dreams, in a way, died with her. So he quit. He quit the X-men and went to Alaska…
And wouldn’t you know he stumbled upon a woman who looked so much like Jean that they could have been sisters? He was skeptical at first, but over time, Maddie became to him a real, breathing woman who loved him as much as he loved her. He saw in Madelyn Prior the ability to bring to life a dream… Even as they went back to the X-men and helped Charles Xavier out (until they both quit and went back to Alaska..) Scott really felt he had found “true” love- with Maddie.
He thought when he married Maddie that it would be the happiest day in his life. That was true- until she became pregnant and he realized he was going to be a father. He took missions, helping out to “save” the world, just a bit- on the side… for old times’ sake.. Both birthed out of his need to help Xavier’s Dream- and for the thrill of the hunt… Life in Alaska was.. Well.. a little boring… And he always came back home- safe. … Unfortunately one of those little “jaunts” of adventure cost him to see his son being born. He missed the birth… and he told himself he wouldn’t miss anymore.
Nathan was a beautiful baby. He gave Scott a sense of family, of happiness, of everything in the world he ever wanted. He had a ‘family’ a real one, all of his own. When Xavier called him to tell him that he had to leave earth for his health, Scott went to go help, taking Maddie and baby Nathan with him to the mansion. He battled, and lost, Storm for undisputed leadership of the X-men, and quit. Going back with his wife and son to Alaska where they would have a normal life.
But normal didn’t sit well with Scott. Not when the news carried information daily of things going on between humans and mutants. Not when he could look over toward his son’s crib and see him growing up in an unsafe world. Things became strained between his need to DO SOMETHING and Maddie wanting him to stay at home and let the “world sort itself out” without him. After all didn’t the X-men have Storm? They didn’t need him anymore. But he needed them… and so it started off as one little favor, one little tactical mission, one little strategy for the “greater good”… Then it became more frequent.. instead of saying he’d be back for a breakfast, it was he’d be back in a few days… Their fights could be heard by the neighbors, some miles away for the volume and passion- for they still had that in their relationship…
Scott couldn’t be content… and that is one regret that will forever weigh on his shoulders- that he wasted his time with his son and with Maddie. Then Maddie said he left one more time, and that was that, he could expect not to have a home to come home too when he got back. At the time it was an important mission, something that could change the fate of the world (weren’t they always?) and he left.
He and the other original X-men (Sans Jean) formed X-Factor, holding close to Xavier’s dream. Scott tried to go back home once, to Maddie and Nathan.. and found the doors closed to him and the locks changed. He threw himself that much more into his work, obsessed with creating a safe world for His Son to grow up in… Maddie would come around when she saw what good work he was doing with X-factor. … He never had any idea that Maddie had contacted the X-men and where living with them while he worked with X-factor in new York.. not until he saw her die in Dallas… and her request to go find their Son.
… It was alone that Scott went on a journey into his past and chased his son across the past.. It was Scott, who stood helpless as he watched his wife, the now “Goblin Queen” sacrifice his son- the reason their marriage was the best- and worst- it could be on the top of the Empire State building.. Saw Jean manifest and trap her, Maddie and Nathan in a psionic barrier, preventing anyone from doing anything- but watch… Scott watched Jean vanish and Maddie die, for real… Blasted the shit outta Sinister for his shenanigans…and became a single father.
Taking care of a small child is not fun when you’re not at all used to being the sole provider. Late nights and long dregs of coffee became staples in his life. Nathan Christopher joined him on missions, and, like his father, manifested his powers early…. Villains being who they are, Apocalypse wanted in on the action and kidnapped Nathan- injected him with a Techno-Organic Virus. Scott had to do one of the hardest things in his life.
He had to let his baby go. He had to give up the dream of a family… of watching his son grow into a safe world that his father helped bring around. He had to give it up- to give his son a chance at life. He did it, but it cost him his heart.
He threw himself into his work, and when Professor X came back after the Shadow King crap, well, X-factor was no longer holding up the dream when the man himself was back. They disbanded and rejoined the X-men. Scott’s been… in his own way.. hiding his emotions… He works with his team, and works with Xavier. He teaches kids and tries not to imagine his son in their faces. And at night he sits in his room, watching the sky and thinking of the time he spent… that he has no one, and nothing to blame but himself.
RP Sample:
Scott rested his hands on the only shot of whiskey he allowed himself. It wasn’t enough to get drunk, or even pleasantly buzzed. Hell, he hadn’t even bothered sipping at it. It remained an amber liquid filled to the brim of the short round glass. He capped the whiskey bottle, half of it gone, carefully measured for any students who thought to steal some of it, and walked to the window. He stared out over the grounds. It was so quiet in the moonlight. Neat gardens and newly paved roads and play areas. The perfect scenery for a quiet life… when the students were trembling in their beds afraid to make too much noise without the teachers sending in fun and unique ways to encourage precious hours of quiet.
… Of course his vision was tainted ruby. Everything was red, from the grass to the trees, to the asphalt (a dark, deep red, but a red none the less.) It was always somewhat sobering to see the world in shades of red. The color of anger, of rage, of blood, of pain, it was amazing he had a sense of humor at all. He tipped the whiskey back and felt it burn down his throat. He was scruffy, and would have to change in the morning. The stubble scratched the edge of his hand as he lowered the glass.
“Today, son, I taught one of the girls how to ride a bike. I’m sure I scared the crap out of the little flower, but sometimes they remember I’m not just a monster.” His voice was soft, but roughened with whiskey and emotion. He spoke to the window, but his empty hand drifted to touch on the picture frame on the side of the window sill. Perched to hide it behind curtains should anyone enter. Two faces shown up at him; Maddie, pregnant and smiling as she leaned against their plane in Alaska, and the baby’s round, happy face as he played with his first toy he could grasp, a little round bumble bee made of fabric. “I miss you in that future world of yours… I haven’t caught the man who did it to you. I will one day. I will make him pay for the time we won’t ever have.”
He gently pressed a finger against Maddie’s side of the photo. “… You were right you know… I couldn’t ever give this up. Not for you. Not for Nathan… Not even when I was a single father… and it cost me him. If I had stayed in Alaska, He would never have found Nathan… You were always right… and I was no good for you.” He sighed and turned to brush the curtains to cover the photos. “And you both paid for that didn’t you? My dreams.”
He snorted and moved back to put the shot glass next to the whiskey bottle. “A solider is as only good as the battle he fights.” He didn’t look as he threw himself back on the bed and bounced once. His eyes had been closed- a safety precaution to blowing a whole into the bedrooms above him- and he laid there in bed, fully clothed and fully awake.
He didn’t bother kicking off his shoes as he turned on his side and sighed into his pillows.
