Basics: Von Rosenberg, Maximilian. Midnight
Full Name: Otto Maximilian Charles Louis von Rosenberg (originally Otto Maximilian Karl Ludwig von Rosenberg)
Codename: Midnight.
Nicknames: None.
Type: Original
Gender: Male
Species: Homo superior
Age: 34
Date of Birth: July 11
Hometown: Grünwald, Bavaria
Current Residence: New York City, New York
Loyalty: Morlock.
Occupation: Head of Security for Acheron Arms, New York Division.
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Gold
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 180 lbs.
Body Type: Lean
Typical Style: Custom -- he normally wears white silk dress shirt and trousers, a white jacket with black tie, and a water-proofed white leather trenchcoat over them, with gold fasteners. He normally also wears gloves; his holoprojector adds the illusion of dress shoes in addition to hiding his less human features. The holoprojector itself is in the form of a pin, fastened to the lapel of coat: a double-headed eagle in gold and black enamel.
Distinguishing Features: Maximilian wears his hair in a widow's peak, with two long bangs arching down to either side, framing his face. The rest falls to below his shoulders, being brushed back. His holoprojector adds the illusion of scars, the most visible being on the outside of his right arm. For the rest of his distinguishing features, see mutations.
Physical Mutations: Midnight is a furred, bipedal predator. He stands digitigrade, balanced by a long, brush-like tail; his head sports a pair of upright, pointed eyes and a vulpine muzzle. His pelt is, over-all, a dark blue; but he does bear several markings in gold. The first is a set of three narrow, elliptical marks in the centre of his forehead, the middle one vertical and the outer two slanted inward. The others are rings: around his lower arms, his legs, and near the end of his brush. He has black, retractable claws on his digits.
Uniform: Apart from his professional outfit, Midnight wears a uniform of his own design when acting on his own account. This is a sleeveless black shirt and trousers, woven of protective fibres. Over it he wears a long coat of black leather, likewise sleeveless, but featuring a pair of matte black metal spaulders. He also wears fingerless black leather gloves. Fininshing the ensemble off is a black belt, which holds the sheath for his sword and the holsters for his guns.
Personality: Maximilian is a man both hard and honourable. He has no attachments to the world as such. He loves his family, his friends, and his countrymen (that is, the Morlocks), and he is loyal to his duties as an employee of Acheron. He is also devoutly religious, which places his other attachments in perspective. They may indeed be considered bonds; they give him strength. Those who attempt to harm him throguh them may find themselves surprsied by his code of honour.
Maximilian's driving goal is the defence of his people. Since his youth he has not lost sight of this, and he has devoted all of his considerable talents to that cause. He does harbour a few deep-seated hatreds, stemming from his experiences. However he knows that hatred can destroy the one who bears it, so he practices restraint. He is a calm man, and his comments are normally dispassionate, although it is plain when he disapproves of something. He also is not one to be over-awed, although respectful of authority.
A side that few outside his family see is his love of the night. He typically relaxes by prowling around in the darkness, or by listening to music that reminds him of the night.
Family:
- Friedrich Johann Sebastian von Rosenberg; father; German diplomat; murdered by Nightmare
- Henrietta Julia Christina von Rosenberg-Neukirchen; mother; inmate of an insane asylum; 66
- Friedrich Johann Sebastian von Rosenberg II/Nightmare; older brother; monster; 36
- Ophelia "Lia" Ingersoll von Rosenberg, née Pryce-Jones; wife; real estate agent; 30
- Isolde Christina von Rosenberg; daughter; 7
- Rossel Gregory von Rosenberg; son; 5
- Mary Josephine von Rosenberg; daughter; 2
- William Nox von Rosenberg; son; 2
History: Maximilian was born in a small town in the German state of Bavaria. He was the second son of a wealthy German politician; a man whose career seemed composed of illimitable, progressive success. As such he had an excellent education, which suited him well. His older brother, Sebastian, was more inclined to athletics, especially martial arts. Maximilian however preferred to study; he also had a love for art, especially music. His father certainly did not discourage this, but he did encourage him to turn his talents to politics.
By the time Maximilian was in his early teens, his father had become Germany's representative to the United Nations, and he would take his son with him to important meetings. Both children by this time were showing a marked preference for the night, but nobody remarked on this as they were otherwise ordinary -- although Sebastian was growing apart form his father. The elder Rosenberg thoguht this a normal part of adolescence; he never suspected that his world was about to end.
When Maximilian was fifteen his father took him to New York City for a conference. It was while he was there that he manifested, transforming into a blue-furred half-beast. Frightened, with strange new feelings burning in his blood, he went to his father. Rosenberg was horrified; he could not accept that this monster was his son. Angry, confused, Maximilian fled the hotel, quickly becoming lost in the city streets. He was soon set upon by an anti-mutant gang, and despite his newfound strength he hardly knew how to defend himself.
He was rescued by a Morlock, and taken down, below the sewers. His education had included learning English, so he was able to communicate with the strange denizens of the underworld. Soon he began a new kind of education: how to survive in a hostile world. Yet he also experienced something he had not known before: the feeling of belonging, of having people around him who actually cared about him. The Morlocks now were his family, his people.
He lived with them three years. During that time, he was fostered by a mutant named Tyr, who boasted enhanced strength and speed, and excelled in martial arts. Then came the Massacre. Maximilian, now calling himself Midnight according to the custom of the forgotten people, was caught with a small group of his fellows. His fighting skills enabled him to survive, but the rest were killed. Midnight was forced up to the surface. There he managed to shake his pursuers, but he was again lost.
Again, he was found. This time, by the agents of an international conglomerate. They surprised him by being interested in helping him. Believing the Morlocks to all be dead, he accepted, even though he was suspicious. They took him off the streets and to a facility, to train him. They were looking to conquer the world -- by economic might, but they could use someone of his abilities to safeguard their assets, and to serve as part of a back-up in case money proved an insufficient weapon.
He learned many things as Acheron Arms groomed him for his role. Midnight -- or, once more, Maximilian von Rosenberg -- was nobody's fool. He knew they intended to use him, but that was not important. What was important was establishing a world where mutants could live in peace. That was what they claimed to want, and he would see to it that they fulfilled that dream, honest or not. Meanwhile, he had a good use for the money they paid him, once they gave him his holoprojector and a position within their security company.
One of the first things he did was look into the fate of his family. It did not take him long to found out that his father had been murdered, and the shock of what she ahd seen ahd driven his mother mad. Of his brother there was no official trace. There were, however, rumours of a black, man-eating "monster" that sounded very similar to his own form. Maximilian was never to track Nightmare down -- though Acheron Arms was also interested in locating the rogue mutant. In time he gave up searching.
As the sole surviving heir (Acheron helped him prove his identity) he inherited his father's considerable estate, pacing a fortune in his hands. He invested most of it in other companies, slowly placing himself in a position to have economic leverage of his own. However he also purchased several defunct farms in upstate New York, linking them together to create an estate of his own -- a place where unfortunates like him could find refuge. In so doing, he met a woman -- the real estate agent, in fact, that was brokering the purchases. Even though she was a baseline human, he found she truly cared for people, and fell in love with her. The two were married, and settle don his new estate -- insofar as his duties would allow.
He also began investigating the sewers, looking for remnants of the Morlocks. He met with success beyond his imagining -- the Morlocks were still alive, even thriving. After some initial hostility, he was recognised as still being one of them, pledging his allegiance once more to Callisto. He opened his estate tot hem, having tunnels extended to it and beginning to fulfill his dream. Not only was his home a more pleasant refuge than the sewers, he also was able to arm the Morlocks with Acheron tech, and train them in the tactics he had learned.
Many years have passed. Maximilian now ahs four children (all mutants), and a fair position of power within Acheron Arms. He is still biding his time, waiting for the new heir to Acheron to emerge. The time, he feels, is fast approaching when battle of some kind must be joined: the MRA does not leave room for indifference.
Classification: Gamma
Powers:
- Bestial Form: Like most zoomorphs, Midnight possesses enhanced physical capabilities.
~ Disease and Poison Resistance: At night his body's enhanced resilience enable it to fight off most diseases and nullify poisons outright.
~ Enhanced Senses: He has acute senses of smell and hearing, and low light vision. Naturally his senses are attuned to track objects at high speeds.
~ Hypercarnivore: Not really a power, but Midnight requires meat to survive, and has a hard time digesting vegetable matter apart from fruit.
~ Natural Weaponry: Midnight's claws and fangs, thanks to his enhanced durability, are potent weapons, superior to steel.
~ Superhuman Durability: His body is much tougher than a human's, his hide alone being able to deflect any ordinary bladed weapon. He can also, at night, regenerate injury.
~ Superhuman Speed: He can reach speeds of about 100 mph and maintain them for several minutes. In terms of his reflexes he can move much faster.
~ Superhuman Strength: At his peak, Midnight possesses level I superstrength.
- Nocturnal Affinity: Midnight's affinity for the night has evolved over the years. At present the night fills him with boundless energy; he cannot be wearied as long as his hemisphere is turned away from the Sun. This is not to say that he has no need to eat or sleep; the energy can burn him out if he does not care for his body. But he suffers no fatigue (assuming he does not exert himself beyond his limits). The traits listed above apply to him at night; during the day, his abilities are those of a peak human (except the toughness of his body which is a constant).
- Psionic Suppression: Midnight negates psionic abilities (telepathy, telekinesis, empathy). Normally he is simply immune to such powers himself. However, if he concentrates, he can extend this power as a spherical field up to a hundred feet (fifty during the day), centred on himself. He can also suppress a psychic's power, if he chooses, by touching one, the duration of the effect depending on the psychic's strength and the amount of contact. He can also extend this power to inanimate objects on his person.
Skills:
- Leadership: While difficult to gauge an intangible, Midnight's charisma, intelligence, learning and sense of dedication combine to make hima capable leader.
- Marksmanship: Aided by his enhanced eyesight, Maximilian is a near-perfect shot with both firearms and longbows.
- Martial arts: Due to his training from Tyr and Acheron, he is a deadly combatant whether unarmed or with a sword.
- Strategy: Midnight was trained in the art of war by Acheron, becoming familiar with a wide range of strategies and tactics.
- Will: Maximilian has a very strong will honed through many years of trial. It is to be assumed that he could best a telepath even if deprived of his powers.
Weaponry:
- Blauennacht: An antique sword made of an unusual metal, possibly extraterrestrial in origin. The blade is that of a longsword; the edges are dark, while the blood channel exposes a blue metal that forms the core of the weapon. The hilt is is blak, featuring a crossguard and a basket. The grip is wrapped in blue leather. The blade is extremely heavy for its size; it shows no signs of wear nor is it known to be damaged by any other material. A Rosenberg family heirloom, Midnight carries it as part of his vigilante gear.
- Espada d'Aqueron: A sword of similar design to Blauennacht was made during the sixteenth century in Spain. Now a museum piece, it was acquired by the Emile family. Being an ordinary sword, it is no longer battle worthy, but a replica was made for Maximilian. It has a reinforced steel blade, black quillon, and a knuckle bow, and a white grip. He wears it while on duty.
- Handgun: A powerful semiautomatic handgun worn while on duty.
- Modified handgun: The same calibre as his on-duty handgun, this weapon has had the barrel reinforced to enable it to withstand blows and be used as a defensive weapon. He wears it as part of his vigilante gear.
- Tranquiliser pistol: A gun that shoots darts containing, normally, a tranquiliser serum. Midnight possesses serums of various strengths, as well as toxins. Part of his vigilante gear.
Role Play Sample: "Impressive. But insufficient." Midnight looked around the room, the so-called "Danger Room". "I do not mean the technology. I have never seen its equal, nor indeed do I expect to. But that is part of the problem." He looked back at his guide.
"This technology should be available for all mutants. Why isn't it? Why do you hide away here? For fear of the humans? Aren't you betraying your own beliefs? Humans and mutants can coexist peacefully, according to your Professor. If that is true why do you show such distrust of them? If it isn't, why do you not act to defeat the foe? If all mutants were to combine their forces, no army on earth would be able to stand up to us."
