He will tell you that he likes to think his way around his problems; sadly, in most cases he simply runs away from his problems and has become somewhat good at running away. This fact has done nothing to help his rather low confidence.
Family: Mother: Lisa Oliver (deceased)
Father: Paul Oliver
History: In most ways Luther had a perfect childhood. He was the only child of two loving parents, whom were fairly well off financially speaking. This was not to last, as his mother died during a hostage situation at a bank. The killer was apprehended and brought to justice, but this came as little consolation to Luther and his father. Paul took to drinking to cope with grief, and drank more heavily as the years past. Luther took up his mother's responsibilities around his home as a way to stay connected with his memories of her.
As time past he grew to resent his father, who had become increasingly verbally abusive. It had been five years since his mother's passing, and while his father had never gone so far as to hit Luther, he had made more than few claims regarding his worth or lack thereof. If this were not enough, his closest friend had been a victim of anti-mutant gang violence shortly after discovering his powers as a telepath. Suddenly Luther found himself politically aware, and concerned at the mutant registration act; though he was torn as the promises of protection for mutants sounded wonderful.
During the first week of January, Luther was walking between classes when a few of the jocks selected Luther to pick on. They shouted many mutant hating remarks, and threatened Luther for his friendships with known mutants. Just before a teacher interrupted the altercation, one of the students shoved Luther against the lockers...HARD. The shock and fear was enough to trigger Luther's own abilities and his body quickly dispersed into a thick, grey fog. After a few moments of panic Luther was able to pull himself together (so to speak) just in time for an even more panicked teacher ordered him to the main office.
Like is so often the case, the fact that Luther was a mutant spread around the school like a plague. His principal constantly pressured him to register as a mutant, and was actively trying to make it necessary for all high-school students who were mutants to register. Hatred, fear, and misunderstanding from students; mixed with the stress from school administration and the very negative reaction from his father, all amounted to more than Luther was able to deal with. Without a single word or note, Luther packed a bag and left his home headed east.
Over the past few months he has made his way to New York, using and developing his abilities stealing for others in exchange for money to eat with.
Classification: Delta
Powers: Luther has the ability to rapidly turn the mass in his body and things immediately touching him to a gaseous state of matter. While not technically correct chemically speaking, Luther calls it rapid sublimation. The grey gas that he and most often his clothing transform to is both chemically neutral and atomically stable. While he changes immediately when any serious kinetic or concussive force affects his body, he is learning to consciously incur the change through his will. While his body is a gas he is still able to moved around though, his motions are quite limited.
This change in matter state does not have to be his entire body either; in the case of getting shot, or in similar circumstances, the change is localized and only a small area is affected allowing the bullets to pass through.
While the change doesn't require a noticeable amount of energy (as it is so often subconscious), after a few minutes it becomes very mentally exhausting to keep track of his body, and that strain is amplified the more dispersed his body becomes. Should he become too spread out he will lose his consciousness and become stuck in his gas form until, eventually his subconscious bring shim back together, which his brain seems to be pre-programmed to do.
In his vapor form his metabolism is extremely slowed, and many normal bodily functions are not required; and other than the necessity for concentration and the incurred mental strain, this for required very little energy.
Weaknesses: While Luther enjoys an immunity from the affects of kinetic forces on a normal human body, he is still vulnerable from many kinds of attacks.
Focused energy, like lasers, will still affect him as they would anyone else should he not be transformed, so long as there is no concussive component in the transfer of energy into his body. The energy will not trigger the change, it would be up to Luther to do so to escape the attack.
Fire can be particularly harmful, and should he be attacked by fire he will be burned until he is able to trigger the change or the pain eventually causes it subconsciously. The the dynamics of thermal energy would have his gas-form body lift with the rising air.
Due to the immediate muscle spasms caused by electrical energy, this triggers the change immediately, but leaves Luther "paralyzed" in gas-form for sever minutes.
Should he ever be trapped in a vacuum, his change will trigger immediately and he will not be able to reform until released. The vacuum must be air tight however.
If he is outdoors or is otherwise in changing barometric pressure, or in windy conditions; this constant motion can be a big set back when trying to reform.
Skills: Running and Hiding for the most part. While he is a natural logician and skillful problem solver, he rarely gets to use this skill set.
Weaponry: --
Role Play Sample: It was incredibly cold. He was wearing two pairs of pants, two shirts and his hoodie; however these offered little comfort against the bitter winds pushing against him. He hurried along as best he could, looking for somewhere to get out of the weather. He kept close tot he treeline running parallel to the road he was following, hoping the tree would bolster his resistance. As he moved ever onward he saw a small light flickering off in the distance. He hurried closer to see what it was. A small fire surrounded by three people.
As he approached he noticed one was quite old, his scowl betraying his disposition. The other man was comparatively young
and he seemed to not even notice Luther. The third was a young girl who could not have been older then Luther, and she was staring directly at him. The older gentleman waved him over, and as Luther got to them, the young man reached his hand out and flames erupted in his palm.
"You look cold" he laughed.
Luther had no idea what to say. The girl looked over to him.
"Stop it!!" she demanded.
"Calm down you too." the older man interrupted. He looked over to Luther, "Sorry. They are pretty new to their powers."
They talked for many hours and the old man explained how he had been taking care of the two others for months now. They all shared stories, and talked about the area. They talked about violence against mutants, and mutant retaliation.
"It seems like humans hate mutants and vice verse, why do take care of these two? Aren't you afraid of being labelled a mutant sympathizer?" Luther asked.
"Let's get one thing straight kiddo, I'm not afraid of anything. Been around too long to be that yellow. We all share this world, human, mutant, or anything else; we gotta look out for one another. Fighting serves it's purpose, it's in our nature, all of us. But it should be to preserve and protect. What I see now is senseless. I care about these two, it's more than just doing my part to bridge the gap; I wanna teach them what I've been telling you. One day I want them to use their powers to help everyone else toward tomorrow, you should do the same."
"You know I'm a..." Luther looked shocked. The man just glared at him.
Luther woke up the following morning, his new acquaintances gone. As Luther walked farther along the road, it dawned on him, that he'd learned so much from his new friend and they had never even traded names.
