Current Residence: New York City, New York.

Personality: Sam is a calm, intelligent man. His general demeanour is friendly, but measured; he often seems relaxed, but will only open up to close friends. He has not many friends, but is very loyal to those few. Under stress he remains cool, calculating advantage and difficulty and acting with precise decision. He does have a deep reserve of emotion, but he is disciplined and does not (normally) let it affect his judgement
His main devotion is to his family and his sworn brother. His patriotism is somewhat diluted by his being an immigrant, but for his brother's sake he will do his utmost to protect New York City and uphold American law. He is also fond of art, and has a keen interest in the humanities.
Family:
- Shizawa Kamimaru; grandfather; Rear Admiral in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Forces; 68
- Shizawa Amaji; father; Captain in the JMSDF; 47
- Shizawa (née Inoue) Chinatsu; mother; Lieutenant Commander in the JMSDF; 46
- Shizawa Naoro; little brother; Lieutenant in the Ground Self-Defence Force; 23
- Cecil "Sonsaku" Benjamin MacCloskey; oath brother; Captain of the 13th Precinct; 25
- Willow Liu Shizawa, née Zhen; wife; police officer; 24
- Benjamin "Benjy" Zhen Shizawa; son; 3
History: Sannosuke was born in Nagasaki, and he spent his childhood travelling between there and his parents' post in the JMSDF base at Sasebo. Occasionally he would tag along as his parents, together with his father's father, attended military and government functions. It was at one of these that he met young Cecil MacCloskey, son of American officers stationed in Okinawa. The two children, despite their different personalities, became instant friends.
The first met at when they were nine. They saw a good deal of each other after that, finding that they did have things in common. Both of them wished to make the world a safe, happy place to live; they also shared a love for the Chinese classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Based on their personalities, they began identifying with characters from the novel -- Cecil with Sun Ce ("Sonsaku" in Japanese), Sannosuke with Zhou Yu ("Shuuyu"). Largely because of this, a few days after Cecil's fourteenth birthday and some months after Sam's (a nickname already given him by his American friend), they swore an oath of brotherhood after the fashion of their ancient counterparts.
It would be several years before the two met again. Cecil's family returned to America, and the two brothers communicated by letter. Cecil went to New York City to live with his mother's brother, for it was his dream to join not the military like his ancestors but the fabled NYPD. He wanted to become Commissioner, and sweep his hometown completely clean of crime.
Meanwhile, Sannosuke was going through changes of his own. Not long after Cecil's departure, Sam's eyes had gone golden. During karate and kendo practice he began manifesting fire from his hands, feet, and sword. He destroyed several shinai and started several fires this way, causing a good deal of anger in the community and distress for his parents. They stood by him, however, Captain Amaji electing to see his son's mutation as a gift from the gods (they were Shintoists, and the mutation of their son encouraged them to become more devout).
In time, he got his pyrogenesis under control. However, he now felt alienated from his peers, relationships with everyone except his family strained. Moreover he was coming under pressure from various groups -- from government to yakuza -- to put his powers to work for them. Despite his own attachment to his native land, he disliked the feeling of being exploited. These factors influenced him to accept when, in his nineteenth year, he got a long-distance call from Cecil asking him to join his oath brother in New York's Police Academy.
He made the long journey, applied for citizenship and registered under the current MRA. He joined the Cadet Corps as soon as possible, and while training met and fell in love with a native of Chinatown -- the beautiful Willow Zhen.
Once they had completed their training and graduated from college, Sam and Willow married, both continuing their careers in the police force. Anti-mutant discrimination saw Sam assigned to a minor clerical position, but he was happy enough there, using his access to information to assist his oath brother, whose talents saw him shooting rapidly up the ranks.
However, when the changing winds of public opinion swept into the NYPD, leaving the department scrambling to show itself "mutant-friendly", Sam did not object to his improved prospects. He was in short order promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the newly established Mutant Response Unit, the department's shiny new team that would, eventually, be made up solely of mutants and have the major responsibility for dealing with mutant-related crimes.
Meanwhile, his first (and hitherto only) child was born, a boy. His wife agreed to name the boy after his oath brother, and with his mother's maiden name included young Benjamin came to represent everything Sam loved. Of course, as with any infant, the child required quite a lot of sacrifices from his parents, leading to Willow taking maternity leave and thus a tighter budget. Sam was all the devoted to his family for it, thoguh, zealously providing for wife and offspring with little thoguht to himself.
Classification: Gamma
Powers:
- Enhanced Senses: Sam possesses superhuman acuity in his eyes and ears, able to focus his vision up to a mile away and pick out faint sounds at several hundred yards, as well as hearing above and below the normal human range. His eyes similarly can see in infrared and ultraviolent, as well as low-light conditions and intense brightness. He is also able to track moving objects with greater certainly than most humans.
- Pyrogenesis: Sam can generate "fire" from any part of his body, which is actually an outflow of psychic energy, manifesting as heat: light and colour depend upon his mood. He himself is immune to being burnt and has great resistance to heat although not total: should he reach a high enough temperature, his body will simply dissolve). The aura that accompanies the generation likewise modifies any object that it envelopes (it is transmitted by conscious contact) to make it resistant to combustion and heat. He can thus sheathe sword or truncheon in flames, or superheat a bullet so that it causes a fire upon impact.
He can also fire the flames directly from his body, although apart from his initial aim he has little to no control over these bursts. He is not pyroknetic: he cannot controls already burning.
- Pyromorphosis: An ability that has yet to manifest, but when placed under extreme stress Sam has the ability to transmute his flesh into living flame. He can, to an extent, mold this flesh how he wishes, and indeed will do so subconsciously to assume a more menacingly shape. However there is a limit to the amount of mass he can add (or subtract), and he cannot alter his structure from bipedal.
This form greatly enhances his speed and reflexes, enabling him to move upwards of sixty miles an hour (the dryer the air, the faster he moves -- significantly humid air can reduce his top speed to forty, while his upper limit is eighty miles an hour, barring wind which he can ride to match it velocity). He can also fly, should he think to provide himself with wings, and will bob to the surface of any liquid amidst effervescence. His senses are likewise enhanced, enabling him to deal with his increased agility.
He still has muscle and bone beneath his flesh (which is indeed fiery liquid and plasma), and can be injured by weapons that can survive the heat of contact with him. Also, objects of about freezing temperature or below will burn him, and may either force him out of this form or kill him outright. He has a high healing factor, his flesh quickly flowing back into place and broken bones fusing back together, but ice-burns will not heal while in this form -- upon reversion, they will remain and heal (if possible) as ordinary burns.
Maintaining this form is very exhausting, and can be done for only about five minutes before he will be exhausted. It should normally take about three days to recover enough to use the ability again. Moreover, while he can remain calm and calculating, this form magnifies his anger, impelling him to destroy and tempting him to recklessness.
(Note: I intend for his pyromorphosis ability to manifest during his first thread, and when it does his other mutations will undergo some changes as well -- I can explain to the other staff in private.)
Skills:
- Close Combat: Growing up in Japan, he was trained in karate and kendo, and while training as a policeman he was taught further hand-to-hand techniques, including the use of the police baton. He is now a formidable opponent with sword, stick or bare hands.
- Firearms: As a policeman he was also trained in the use of side arms, and with his superhuman vision he is a crack shot.
- Polymath: Sam may be considered an amateur, but he has skill in many arts and social sciences.
- Polyglot: Being born in Japan, he is fluent both in mainstream Japanese and Okinawan. He can also speak English with no practical accent.
Weaponry:
- Handgun: A Glock-9 (on-duty).
- Katana: A modern, combat-worthy Japanese longsword (off-duty).
- Truncheon: A foot-long straight police baton (on-duty).
Role Play Sample: He ducked, letting the elongated nails fly harmlessly over his head. And a good thing too; he winced as he heard them penetrate the concrete wall of the warehouse with shattering impact. He reached for his gun, but before he could unholster it, the mafioso swept his hand out, sending another salvo of the super-hardened keratin at the policeman.
He made a swift calculation, and rolled to one side. Nonetheless one of the nails furrowed his left shoulder. Blood welled out to wet his torn sleeve as Sam gasped in pain. Gritting his teeth he drew his gun, took aim, and coldly fired. He was aiming for the upper arm, both to warn the mutant criminal not to push his luck and to incapacitate that hand, should the gangster ignore that warning.
