Basics: Grieve, Alex; Blackwing
Full Name: Alexander Grieve
Codename: Blackwing
Nicknames: Raven, Grieve, crow(not to his face!)
Type: Original
Gender: Male
Species: Homo superior
Age: 30
Date of Birth: November 20
Hometown: Northern Ontario, Canada
Current Residence: Where he can find a place to rest his head until he find a place that will take him in.
Loyalty: Neutral, for now, looking for a place to live.
Occupation: Unemployed
Hair Colour: Black
Eye Colour: Black
Height: 6 Feet, 2 Inches
Weight: 196Lbs
Body Type: Lean, strongly built with natural muscles
Typical Style: Whatever he can get his hands on that’s decent, typically dressed in black clothing of some kind though, and heavy boots, doesn’t usually have a shirt on either.
Distinguishing Features: Scars here and there on his arms, shoulders and chest, they aren't bad though.
Physical Mutations: Black eyes as mentioned above. Also, two large black feathered with on his back. They jut out straight back and so hamper his ability to hide them or wear a shirt.
Uniform: Same as typical style for now.
Personality: Alex can be out going and a great mutant to be around, at times, but he can be aggressive at times as well, jumping without looking. He tries to get along as best he can, but at the same time is self-conscious about his wings being seen, though at the same time proud of them. It keeps him confused around other mutants who don’t really show any outward sign of their mutation. When he does feel like he can consider someone a friend, he’s protective of them and caring, putting himself in harm’s way to defend them. If he’s lacking sleep, however, his aggression rises and so does his irritability(more explained under the mutations section). Severe fear of fire and can be rather greedy when it comes to food.
Alex also has a second mind within him, a feral mind as it were. This is a more malevolent mind, and it could also be classed as a second being as well. When Alex becomes upset over something he's prone to loose himself to this side of himself and change personalities(and form; see powers). This feral Alex only sees enemies and will attack anything he can see, friend or foe. The normal Alex is always fighting this side back, but if he needed wearing him down will allow him to gain control, as will knocking him out.
Family: Mother and father dead, killed in a house fire, murdered. Has lost touch with anyone else.
History: Alex grew up in the far North of Ontario, Canada and lived there for many years, even after his mutation showed. Alex was an only child and had a decent life as well, but he rarely left his parent’s house, and was never allowed to go to school. Alex was born with wings already starting to grown, so it was a minor blessing that he was born at home instead of a hospital. At first his parents were terrified, but they grew to see past the wings to their baby boy and while careful raised him the best they could.
It was soon apparent that Alex would never learn to speak English, not matter how hard his parents tried he would only caw and croon in reply. When he was only enough they worked out a series of hand signals so Alex could communicate with his own parents, neither of whom had any kind of mutation. Because of how remote they were it was easy for Alex to remain hidden in the forest if his parents had company over or if he just needed to stretch his wings. But he never left their property.
He learned to fly with help of the ravens that lived around his home, who had taken an interest in him by this time. So it was little shock when Alex found that he could understand them when they spoke to one another, and started to reply in turn. His parents, while stunned at this, were happy that he finally had peo… er, friends to talk to instead of trying to sign what he was thinking to them.
When Alex was about 17 he discovered his ability to shift forms, and rather by accident at that. He was never allowed to go very high in the air while flying, least he was spotted from below. So one day while watching his bird friends high in the air, Alex started to think really hard on wanting to be that high and was startled to find, when he opened his eyes, that he was not his normal self.
However, this also woke up the second mind within him, and that’s when his life took a turn for the worse. Alex started to lose sleep and was plagued by nightmares of death and destruction. His parents were worried but they could find no way to help him on their own, and were hesitant about getting outside help. The Super Powers Registration Act(the Canadian version of the Mutant Registration Act in the US) scared them to death, but they could not bring themselves to register Alex, having no idea how he would react and how the people around them would react either. So they doubled their efforts to protect their son from being found.
However, Alex’s flights in his raven form with his friends did not go wholly unnoticed. With Alex being larger than a normal raven he was easily spotted by and some hunters had taken notice. One afternoon they set out to find the large raven as a sort of prize and trophy. It was the first few gunshots that caught Alex’s attention, and while used to firearms he was nervous around them.
Home alone, he knew he had to look into this himself so he set out. It wasn’t long until he came upon a dead raven, shot by a shotgun, and his anger boiled. He found the hunters as they picked up one of the ravens they had killed, examined it and tossed it aside. That tipped Alex over the edge, and he snapped, his feral mind washed over him and he changed into his hideous form and tore the men apart before blacking out.
He woke at home, his parents had found him just in time to see his twisted form before he shifted back, covered in the blood of the men he had killed. They tried to cover it up, terror was now the dominate feeling in their small house.
But Alex’s actions that day had not gone unnoticed, the hunters’ family started to wonder and searched for them. The hunters had left word of where they were going so the search was started there, and it landed Alex’s family right in the middle of the blame. They weren’t many people in the area, the bodies were gone with no trace, it could not have been an animal attack, at least not a natural one anyway.
But no proof could be found that they had done anything, but the family of the murdered men were convinced of who did the deed. They returned under the cover of night a few weeks later and lit the house on fire. Alex’s parents died in that fire but Alex managed to fly out of his window to safety. He desperately wanted to get revenge, but knew it would do no good. When the fire died out he walked through what was left of his home, but there was little left. He grabbed what he could, the little that it was, before he could hear sirens coming in the distance. Knowing that the blame would be put on him if they found him, Alex was forced to flee his home.
He wondered for a long time, alone aside from his raven friends, but they would not stray far from their home nest before leaving him. Eventually he made his way into a park and managed to overhear people speaking of places that accepted mutant. Groups like the X-Men, Brotherhood, and Alex made his way South to find these groups and see if he could find a home once again.
Classification: Epsilon/Delta
Powers:
Animal mutation; Raven Aside from the easily seen wings on his back, this mutation affects him in many ways, but not all good. The wings are strong enough for him to fly and even carry someone if they aren’t too heavy. He can speak with his kin birds as well, and while he can understand English he can’t speak it, but it’s possible for him to learn some words, names are easiest. The more animal part of his mind allows him a degree of creativity in figuring problems out, at least simple ones. It also affects his digestive system, allowing him to almost eat like a raven, his stomach acid breaking down pretty much anything he eats.
Shift form Alex has two forms he can take. One is a full raven form, that’s a bit larger than the average full grown raven. He can take this form at will, but there’s nothing special beyond looking like a normal bird. The second form is far more useful, yet unpredictable. Buried within Alex’s mind in a second being, a mind of hate and anger, a mind that wants nothing more than to cause damage. This is the part of the raven’s mind that is known in stories as them being representations of death and destruction, they are carrion birds. Should this form be allowed out Alex shifts into a grotesque melding of a human and raven, beak and all, and gains additional strength as well. Alex knows of this form and is terrified of it, and it haunts his dreams, causing nightmares and sleepless nights, which in turn make Alex irritable. Anger and fear can allow this form to show itself, and it can fixed by either calming Alex down or incapacitating him somehow. More detail can be added if requested on looks of the mutation, otherwise, left out for IC use.
Minor Strengh Hardly noticeable, and likely part of his raven mutation to aid in flying and carrying. Where others of his build and strength could lift, say, 50 pounds, Alex can lift up to 80 pounds on his own. It’s not much, but it does help, he just needs to remember that he has that added strength.
Skills: Scouting and tracking
Weaponry: Nothing that he carries around, but is adept at using staff and pole type weapons if he can get his hands on something.
Role Play Sample:
Such a beautiful day this was! And from his vantage point he could see for miles around the top of the bell tower. It was early morning so few people would be out and about in the little down the tower looked over, so they would not notice the winged man standing above them. A small group of ravens were also at the top of the tower and some were still in the air circling above.
Alex smiled as he stretched out his large black feathered wings while he took in the sites below. He was getting close to his destination, his natural flight instincts told him so, a place where, hopefully, he would be accepted for what he was. A raven came over to him and Alex placed his arm out for his kin to light upon, the large black bird crooned and Alex smiled, stroking the bird’s head.
He could not go back home again, so far North, it had taken him a long time to get this far without being discovered. This was a nice peaceful town, he wished that he could remain here and live, but they would never accept him as one of their own, not with his mutations. Black eyes blinked as he sighed sadly, he missed home, but knew he needed to find a new place to live, somewhere he was welcome.
Just then, behind him, the door to the top of the tower opened and a man dressed in black robes and a white collar appeared. Alex froze, while the rest of the ravens took wing, and the priest stopped dead when he saw Alex. They stared each other down for a few silent seconds before the priest preyed not to be killed.
Alex frowned and backed away, he had no intention of hurting this human, but he could not speak as such, only caw like the birds. The human turned and ran back down the stairs as fast as he could while Alex kicked off into the air. The last thing he needed was to stick around and have half the town out after him. He didn’t know their true feelings towards mutants and didn’t want to find out either.
Once in the air Alex started to shrink and grow more feathers and before long he was just another raven in the sky, albeit a bit larger than the rest. It wasn’t long before Alex could see the priest and a few others from within the church he had been perched on come outside and look around, thankfully they weren’t armed.
He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but they were all looking around and pointing at the ravens in the air. The sudden report of a shotgun from somewhere in the area startled the ravens and quickly they turned and made their way from the area. Alex looked back at the small town with sad thoughts, yet another place that looked at him and judged him right away. Sometimes he hated humans for their judgement of mutants, sometimes he pitied them as well. It was a conflicting nature that annoyed him at times, but he needed to keep himself in control of those thoughts; lest his feral side break free.
His stomach rumbled, he needed something to eat, but that would have to wait a while longer, he needed to put distance between himself and this town.
