History: Sandra E. Ripley was born to Robin and Jules Ripley in Magnolia, Texas. She lived the first part of her life in pleasant bliss among friends and family until her powers started to manifest. It first happened with their English bulldog named ‘Ozzie’; Sandra – who was 12 at the time – had been playing with the dog in the back yard. Her mother overheard the sound of two dogs barking and looked out the window to see no child and two semi-identical Bulldogs and a pile of Sandra’s clothes. Robin ran outside, calling for her daughter and to her surprise, one of the win dogs bounded up to her before transforming into a completely nude Sandra.
Terrified for her daughter’s safety, Robin and Jules forbade her from ever using the power in public; instead, they insisted that she practice the ability in the attic far from prying eyes. Confused, Sandra reluctantly did so, practicing by transforming into the animals that she had touched. Sandra quickly discovered that she tended to begin morphing when she tended to get overly emotional. It would start out in minor ways, her eyes changing color or her hands twisting into paws. In the beginning all she could do is retreat and hide until she was able to calm down. Fortunately, her parents realized the danger and pulled her out of public school.
Sandra continued through high school via home schooling, learning to control – or rather, suppress – her emotional issues. In her spare time she continued to practice her ability and became increasingly interested in Animal Behavior. By the time she graduated from high school, Sandra had already been accepted to Michigan State University where she later earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Zoology with an Associate of Science in Behavioral Psychology. After Graduation, she moved to New York City where she worked at the Central Park Zoo. It was here that she first met Bobby Drake, and – against her better judgment – revealed her powers to him.
Soon after meeting Bobby Drake, Sandra was able to gain an internship with a group of Zoologists working in Masai Mara, Kenya. The trip proved to be a complete bust. Rather than be allowed to go out onto the field, Sandra found herself stuck at camp working as a cook and maid to the men. Her only solace was on the nights that she could sneak out at night to enjoy the wilds as only she could; it did not last, however, and Sandra’s absence was noticed. When she refused to disclose where she had been, her boss informed her that she would never make it as a zoologist and that he would have to let her go unless certain arrangements were made. Disgusted and embarrassed, Sandra refused and returned to New York City.
Sandra did not announce her return for several days, choosing instead to wallow in her own self-pity. One evening while sitting at a local café, Sandra had a chance meeting with yet another member of the X-men: Warren Worthington who was somehow able to pull the woman out of her deep depression. Although it often feels as if trouble follows the two whenever they’re together, they became very close. The two began to date each other exclusively.
Sandra started working as a free-lance animal behaviorist. Initially, she would work for the Zoos and other private wild animal centers, but soon she was working with domestic pets as well. Just as her business was becoming lucrative, Warren was called away on ‘business’ and asked for her to come along. As tempted as she was, Sandra couldn’t imagine leaving everything she had already built up behind and refused. This effectively put their relationship on a hiatus.
Then, the new Mutant Registration Act was passed.
Sandra didn’t register. Something about the whole ordeal made her paranoid. Only her family and fellow mutant friends really knew that she was a mutant and she hoped that they would be willing to keep her secret. All she had to do was to be careful and keep her head down, perhaps she wouldn’t be noticed?
Classification: Beta
Powers: Sandra can absorb the DNA of any living or deceased fauna, that she has full contact with (meaning a simple strand of hair or drop of blood will not do), and take on their genetic appearance, abilities, and powers; however, she cannot retain tattoos, scars, or the knowledge to control the powers/abilities aside from basic instinct. (Example: If she were to take the DNA of Scott Summers she’d have his appearance and powers but lack the control and the need for ruby glasses).
She is unable to absorb clothing when she transforms unless it is skin tight which is why she often wears a leotard under her clothing. While in the form of a creature that cannot normally communicate, Sandra is able to use limited telepathy: Meaning that she cannot read minds but instead can ‘speak’ into the minds of those she chooses; however, this can be a hindrance should she use the form of a creature that cannot hear she will be unable to hear any response given.
A strange side affect of her power is because her body transforms down to the genetic level, any wounds received in one form do not translate into the next; however, morphing takes a tremendous amount of energy and overuse of the power will exhaust her and she will eventually pass out. Also, for reasons Sandra cannot explain, any scarring that she may receive in her original form will no longer be there when she transforms back. This is why she has no distinguishing features like scars or tattoos.
Lately, Sandra has come to believe that it is theoretically possible to combine the DNA of two different subjects of the same or similar species to create a hybrid. She also believes that she can absorb the DNA of another human, but she is still frightened to even attempt it for fear she may become ‘stuck’ as that person.
Skills: Due to her chosen profession, she is skilled in biological sciences and behaviorism. She has moderate proficiency when it comes to computer use; she is an avid runner and has an athletic body to show for it. She has a license for both a automobile and a motorcycle.
Weaponry: Semiautomatic Hand Guns and Tranquilizer Riffles; in combat she tends to morph into an animal and use natural weapons.
Role Play Sample: Sandra E. Ripley stared into her reflection and tugged at the flesh of her ears with a thoughtful frown. She remembered fondly the day that her mother took her to get her first set of real earrings at the age of ten, only to have to get them repierced a little over two years later after her first transformation. After the third or fourth time, Sandra’s mother gave up, stating that it was a waste of money. It may have been, but that didn’t stop the girl from wanting to hang something pretty from her ear. They were impractical too, especially in her line of work. She helped take care of the big cats of Potter Park Zoo, and no one there really cared if she looked pretty or not. Sometimes, she wondered why she even did her hair. No, she knew why: because in spite of everything she still liked to feel pretty… even if she was wearing coveralls and cleaning out cages.
The woman pushed a few stray strands of platinum blonde hair to the side and, with one final glance to the mirror, left her dorm – locking the door behind her – and headed down the hall towards the exit. She passed only one or two fellow students on her way and gave them a polite smile when they looked her way. Not many people got up at this time in the morning. She stepped out into the cold air and tugged her coat closer to her body longing for the warm winters of East Texas. At least it isn’t snowing, she thought, taking a glance upwards to the colorful sky. The sun was peaking over the horizon, spreading an array of warm colors over the distant clouds. It was a beautiful site, but it was one that she had seen far too many times.
She couldn’t wait until summer; she couldn’t wait until Masai Mara: the hot summer nights, the hours of blessed solitude waiting for the brief interludes when the leopards would show their presence… too bad it was only going to be for six weeks; but, perhaps if she made a positive impression she could return or even stay longer. Maybe, if she was careful, she could slip away and see the preserve through the eyes of one of those beautiful cats.
Maybe.
Sandra let out a heavy sigh that clouded in the air in front of her and gently pulled on her helmet before straddling her Yamaha. Maybe, but probably not: it was too risky.
