History: Yoshida Shiro was born in Agarashima, Japan, to a mother who suffered radiation poisoning from the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. She died before he had a chance to become attached to her, and Shiro was raised by his uncle, Tomo. Tomo hated western society, particularly the United States. He raised Shiro with this same hatred, along with the desire to recreate an Imperial Japan.
Shiro’s power was present from birth, due to the exposure to radiation in the womb. His powers caused his uncle to see him as a weapon against the West, and when he was deemed ready Shiro was sent to the United States in a costume that looked like a Rising Sun, the symbol of Japan. The X-Men intervened, saving Washington D.C. and thwarting Sunfire in the process. In the midst of the combat, Sunfire witnessed his father being killed by his uncle. Enraged, Sunfire returned to Japan and killed Tomo, taking his life into his own hands.
Years later, Shiro was contacted by Professor Xavier and asked to rescue the original X-Men from the living island, Krakoa. Sunfire accepted out of simple honor, completed the mission, and then parted ways.
After severe exposure to the Jack of Hart’s “Zero Fluid,” half of Sunfire’s body turned completely black and he began having difficulties with his powers. Weapon Plus approached him, claiming inaccurately that the Zero Fluid had caused cancer to spread throughout his body. They tried to manipulate him into doing their bidding, offering treatment for the false cancer if he did what they asked. Sunfire refused, and they shot him and left him for dead.
Sunfire dropped off of the grid, allowing the world to believe he had died, until Jean Grey contacted him to request his help to save Professor X from Magneto. Sunfire, still recovering from his gunshot wound, refused to help but sent his sister instead.
After recovering, Sunfire rejoined the X-Men for a brief time. His near-death experience had given him a new outlook on life, and he turned his back on his life of crime. When a photo was leaked of him with Rogue and Mystique in a scenario they had no memory of, Sunfire and Rogue set out to hunt down Blindspot, who issued the photo. They were met by an enraged Lady Deathstrike, who revealed that in his past, Tomo had sent Shiro to steal the adamantium-bonding process from Weapon Plus along with Rogue and Mystique. During the fight that incurred, Shiro’s powers set off the sprinkler system and the room was filled with steam, allowing Deathstrike to sneak behind Shiro and attack him, cutting both of his legs off in the process.
In order to stop Deathstrike, Shiro ordered Rogue to absorb his powers. Rogue refused at first, but Blindspot pushed her on top of him and she gained all of Shiro’s abilities and memories.
After the fight, everyone believed that Sunfire was dead, even though they could not find the body. In truth, he had been rescued by the Yoshida clan, who cared for him in a secret hospital. Shiro refused the offer of the latest, high-tech prosthetic legs, preferring to instead die with honor. Before he could embrace death, however, a newly resurrected Apocalypse approached him and offered to not only give him his legs back, but his powers, too. Shiro accepted in haste, the offer being almost too good to be true.
In the midst of the transformation, Shiro realized that what he was doing was wrong. He attempted to escape, but did not want to leave without rescuing Gazer, another mutant who had been collected by Apocalypse. He arrived too late, and Gazer had already become War. Shiro was captured again, and his transformation was completed.
He fought the X-Men as Famine, the Horseman of Apocalypse, using his new abilities to cause flashes of light that induced hunger to weaken them. The Four Horsemen together were not enough to defeat the X-Men, however. Sunfire escaped, Gazer was killed, and Polaris and Gambit were captured. Shiro attempted to rescue the two prisoners, but Polaris was able to resist Apocalypse’s influence enough to deny rescue. Gambit left with Sunfire, and the two were eventually approached by Mister Sinister.
Sinister was able to reverse a lot of the brainwashing done by Apocalypse, leaving just enough intact to reprogram Remy and Shiro to do his bidding. The two were sent out to fight Cable, destroying his home and leaving the impression that the powerful man was dead. After that, Shiro gladly joined the ranks of the Marauders, finding the thrill of battle to be the ultimate joy.
Classification: Alpha
Powers: Solar Flare: Sunfire’s body acts as a solar panel, absorbing the heat and radiation from the sun (and other sources) and, through a mentally triggered, biochemical process he uses the absorbed radiation to ionize the matter around him, creating supercharged plasma. The plasma ignites any oxygen it comes into contact with, creating intense flames that burn hot enough to melt steel.
Flight: By redirecting the heat around him downward, Sunfire is able to create superheated air currents that propel him through the air. To fly faster, he increases the heat, eventually igniting the air behind him to make it appear as if he leaves a trail of fire. His top flight speed is unknown, but he was able to fly faster than 150mph before his transformation into Famine, and has become faster, since.
Plasma Blasts: By channelling the plasma generated by his powers through his hands, Sunfire is capable of launching high-energy, burning projectiles.
Plasma Emanation: Sunfire can increase the temperature of the air around him, up to an estimated 1,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit at full power. He can use his power in a massive blast, demonstrating such control over the area of effect that one person may feel like they have been sunbathing all day, and another would be completely incinerated.
Heat Signature Sense: Sunfire’s power grants him the ability to shift his focus from the normal, visible spectrum of light to the infrared spectrum, allowing him to actually see heat.
Plasma Shield: By shaping the plasma generated by his body, concentrating it all in front of him, Shiro can create an effective “shield,” which burns hot enough to melt incoming bullets.
Solar Shielding Psionic Field: Shiro’s body has a naturally occurring, psionic field surrounding it, which protects him from the radiation and heat given off by his body. This shield is active at all times, and is the means by which Sunfire shapes and redirects the energy produced by his power. The shield is also what keeps those around him from being exposed to radiation, allowing him to interact with the real world as a normal person.
Solar Hunger: Apocalypse granted Shiro the ability to create flashes of light which stimulate the brain into believing the body is hungry. It is unknown exactly how this process works, but most believe that the flashes accompany a slight, psychic manipulation, generating illusory messages that travel through the optic nerve.
Skills: Shiro is an accomplished martial artist, and is trained in karate, judo, and kendo. He exercises daily, keeping his body at peak strength and endurance, and has undergone extensive training in the combat uses of his powers.
Weaponry: Shiro carries no weapons, but is trained in the use of almost anything as a weapon. If he had to choose a favorite, he would choose a katana, however he believes that the use of tools to accomplish one’s goals is dishonorable.
Role Play Sample: Shiro looked down at his hand, repeatedly curling it into a fist and then relaxing it again. He had been waiting in this spot for hours, waiting for the signal. Finally, a voice in his head told him it was time. A smile spread across his face as he stood and walked out of the bushes he had been hiding in. The smile spread unnaturally wide as Shiro activated the burning energy within himself. The skin and clothes on his body melted almost immediately, and there was a deafening roar as the air around him ignited. He quickly forced himself into the air, rocketing high above the building that held his target.
He pointed his hand at the rooftop, palm open and fingers outstretched. He quickly fired three blasts of burning plasma downward. He revelled in the screams that reached up to him with the fingers of the growing flames that engulfed the building below. He let out a triumphant roar, then shot toward the earth, leaving a trail of burning oxygen behind him.
The walking sun landed with a thud, a sound that intensified the fear resonating through the inhabitants of the building.
There was a man at his feet, doubled over and coughing from the smoke. Sunfire reached down and easily hoisted him into the air by his throat, the smouldering pits of his eyes burning through the the man’s soul. ”Where is she?” he asked, his voice a resonating growl.
”I don’t know,” the man choked, tears streaming from his eyes. Shiro growled, releasing the aura holding the flames back. He laughed as they hungrily lept onto the man’s body, feeding on him, wasting him away into a smoking pile of bones. Returning his focus to the task at hand, the Walking Sun continued through to the next room of the house, searching for his target.
