Steve Ashton grew up in Browndell, Texas. A relatively small town, where everyone seemed to know each other. At the beginning of his life, he was isolated slightly, from other people...The small child had a deformity, that was overlooked for the most part, but gave him slight difficulties growing up. A small tail grew from his backside.
The child was never that normal, and it was difficult for him to make friends. He was always compared to his older brother, who was the perfect example of a country boy, while Steve Ashton was anything but. His older brother was wonderful at farm work, and always seemed to be genuinely kind to the neighbors. Helping around the community, and showing everyone hospitality. Steve was much more closed off, as if he was afraid to do all of those things. The socially awkward child, didn't respond when people gave him casual “Good mornings”, or “How's that mother of yours?”, and instead of farm work he would spend his time exploring the wide open spaces, and trying to find imaginary treasures. He was always curious, and this led people to believe that there was something wrong with the child. For some reason, he even seemed to get along better with Northerners, who visited his little town, more so than the people he lived around.
During his late childhood, he was brought to a beach for vacation, a vacation that costs his family all the money they had been saving to go on, but regardless, they had a great time. Steve Ashton even took up surfing, an activity that manifested his love for adventure and a rush of adrenaline. When he was surfing he felt as if he were in a new world where he wasn't the awkward kid, it made him feel honestly happy for the first time.
His parents recognized his talent for surfing, and as small-town people would, decided to cash in on his new-found talent. In a matter of months he was moved into a house in San Diego California. It was a huge adjustment for a child around 10, especially with the downgrade of housing situation that came with moving to a smaller city. Even though, when he hit the water he felt rejuvenated, as if his problems didn't matter. He won amateur competitions at the start of his surfing career easily and was a natural, although as the competitive aspect and money aspect of the sport began to surface , he realized the tiring nature of the job at a young age.
His teenage years consisted of extensive training for his sports day in and day out. He refrained from developing crucial social skills and usually hung out with people of the older age, but his surfing gave him a suitable level of physical fitness and flexibility. His young career seemed almost to come completely into place. He was fairly known in the southern California area and listed by ESPN as the top 50 most promising athletes , placing at #38. Unfortunately his career came to a swift end at what seemed like one of the most important tournaments of his life.
It was a sunny, but wild day to be surfing for the Surf cup San Diego. Steve Ashton had been training for this moment for months, and the push from his parents to win the prize money left him a little un-easy but ready regardless. The tournament had 4 rounds, and Steve passed the first two with ease, but his small advisory squad that consisted of his dad and brother agreed to bring out the big guns for round 3. He happily took the advice, surfing out to the wave, attempting a trick that he's only pulled off twice. Unfortunately, he fell into the massive wave of water. He rushed down through the water at astonishing speeds, his lungs starting to feel the pressure of the water and his vision beginning to grow blurry. In the distance though, he could make out a figure swimming towards him, and as it approached further he made out the figure of a shark, steadily passing towards him. His first instinct was to swim faster, but failed as the shark dashed by him, its teeth scrapping against his arm causing him to bleed, then he blacked out.
He was taken to the hospital that night, only suffering a minor cut on his arm which made it possible for him to leave as soon as possible, the next morning. His family was shocked over the injury, and luckily he had been saved before the shark could have possibly killed him. Although shocked, his family was already taken over by greed. They urged him to go back to surfing as soon as possible, which Steve Ashton didn't agree with. A huge argument eventually led to him running away, but as he left he recalled his mom reaching and grabbing his arm, only to jerk her arm back, astonished by how rough skin texture.
The Incident with his mom led him to discover his other abilities. Also the fact that his teeth began to grow sharper by the day, eventually stopping by the time he hit 14. He was a runaway, but what he could do helped him fend off anybody who came to harm him. He thought this was going to be his life, running from city to city, state to state, with nowhere to live. Until one day, he overheard two people talking about a school for mutants in New york, and After scrapping up enough money to buy multiple bus trips to new york, enrolled in the school.
